Roger Schank started the first interdisciplinary department at Northwestern University. This Institute for the Learning Sciences hired cognitive scientists who were interested in doing research about learning with computers.

He is also known for his interest in the area of Artificial Intellegence. He believes in the idea of "just-in-time" training.
