Haha, to err is human! We need something to improve our performance.

An example from "Human Performance Technology" (Marc Rosenberg)

A computer company wishes to develop and sell a new-model laptop computer. It surveyed its customers' requirements and want to develop a successful business strategy in the marketplace. Based on these requirements, the performance analisis produces a set of tasks, competency models, productivity levels, etc., that describes the functions of workers in different segments of the company. It has also looked at the current capabilities of its design team, production personnel, and marketing and sales force, as well as the actual quality of the service being offered to the customers. In this case, the performance gap lies in the difference between the workforce requirements necessary to successfully design, build, sell, and service this new laptop computer and the acual ability of the firm to carry the strategy out. Also it is possible that the gap is different for different segments of the workforce.

Not only does performance analysis help in determining performance gaps, it also focues the organization on the level of severity of the gap, from function to function, which helps to distribute the investment to improve performance.
